Masked & Remembered: An Ancestral Masquerade 🎭

When we opened the doors to HDY Haus Studio in Durrës, we envisioned a beautiful, calm space where creative people could gather, share ideas, and connect deeply.

Following an unexpected pause in September, we are slowly finding our rhythm again, and we cannot think of a better way to welcome our community back than an evening of masks, music, memories, and meaningful conversations.

As October brings the familiar excitement of Halloween, we wanted to do something a little different. Something that invites us to reflect on our roots, celebrate our identities, and remember the people who have shaped our lives.

In Yoruba culture, Egungun is a sacred ancestral masquerade tradition honouring the presence and legacy of ancestors. Drawing inspiration from its themes of remembrance and heritage, we are hosting a Contemporary Ancestral Masquerade at the studio. This is a creative community gathering, not a traditional Egungun ceremony.

Whether you have visited us before or have been curious about the studio, we would love to welcome you.

We encourage everyone to wear a mask that reflects their personality, style, heritage, or imagination.

Whether it is a traditional wooden piece, a contemporary artistic design, a handmade creation, or an elegant masquerade mask, come ready to express yourself.

No mask? Do not let that stop you from joining us!

The Ancestral Memory Wall

For this evening, we are creating a collaborative Memory Wall where guests can honour the people who have influenced their lives.

Bring a small photograph, write down a name, or share a favourite quote from an ancestor, loved one, mentor, or historical figure whose legacy inspires you.

Participation is entirely optional. You are just as welcome to come, observe, and enjoy the evening.

Drinks & Refreshments (BYOB) ☕️🥂

To keep things simple and focused on connection, we will not be serving food.

HDY Haus will provide fresh coffee, hot cocoa, and water. You are also welcome to bring your preferred beverage to enjoy during the evening.

Music & Atmosphere 🎶

Forget the usual Halloween horror sound effects!

We will have a curated playlist of percussion, highlife, Afrobeats, and neo-soul, creating a relaxed atmosphere for conversation and connection.

We will also invite a few willing guests to share the stories behind their masks or the people they are honouring.

And before the evening ends, we will have a fun Best Mask / Best Dressed vote, with a little studio treat for the winner!
