Speaking

Talks about the systems people actually have to use

Sessions for conferences, meetups and internal teams on knowledge, membership and community. Practical rather than inspirational, and drawn from client work rather than from a framework.

  • Remote or in person
  • Recording is fine

Topics

Each of these can run as a short conference talk or a longer working session with a team. They can also be combined if you have a half day to fill.

  • Knowledge

Why your help centre goes unread

    20 to 45 minutes

Most help centres are written to describe the product rather than to answer the question the customer arrived with. This session covers how to tell the difference, how to find the articles that are quietly failing, and what to fix first.

Useful for support leads, technical writers and anyone who owns a knowledge base by accident.

  • Membership

The quiet month before a member leaves

    20 to 45 minutes

Cancellation is a lagging indicator. The decision is usually made weeks earlier, during a month when nothing appears to be wrong.

This session covers what that month looks like in the data you already hold, and why the trouble almost always started at the beginning of the membership rather than the end.

  • Community

A community is not a channel

    20 to 45 minutes

In a channel, the organisation talks and the audience receives. In a community, members talk to each other. Most spaces described as communities fail that test.

This session covers the test itself, why launches create spikes rather than habits, and what a normal Tuesday in a healthy space needs.

  • Philosophy

    Live Well. Build Well.

    20 to 30 minutes

What it means to build software that respects the people who have to use it, and the people who have to maintain it.

Less a talk about technology than about the decisions that get made early and quietly, and who ends up carrying them.

If your event needs something close to one of these but not quite, say so. Reshaping a talk for a specific audience is usually the easy part.

Formats

Conference or meetup talk

Twenty to forty five minutes, with time for questions. Slides are kept light, because the useful part is usually the examples rather than the deck.

Team session

Sixty to ninety minutes with one team, run as a discussion rather than a lecture. This works best when the group brings a real problem to hold the session against.

If you want a working session that produces decisions rather than notes, that is a workshop rather than a talk, and it is priced differently.

Podcast or panel

Happy to join either. Remote is straightforward, and a quiet room and a decent microphone are already in place.

Practical details

Where

Remote anywhere. In person from Durres, Albania, with travel possible for events that can cover it.

Recording

Recording and publishing the session is fine, with no restrictions attached.

Fees

These depend on format, audience and travel, and community events are treated differently from corporate ones. Ask, and you will get a straight answer rather than a rate card.

Notice

Four weeks is comfortable. Less than that is worth asking about anyway, because it sometimes works.

Invite us to speak

Tell us the event, the date, the audience and roughly how long you want. If you already know which topic fits, say which one. If you do not, describe the audience and we will suggest something.

Send an enquiry

You will hear back within two working days.
